Integrated Water Management
Water sensitive cities represent a holistic and forward-thinking approach to urban water planning and management. Water sensitive cities are sustainable, resilient, climate adaptive, productive and liveable. Water sensitive cities deliver social, environmental and economic outcomes that our communities expect.
A water sensitive city approach is critical in enabling our cities to be adaptive and thrive in the face of global challenges such as climate change and rapid urbanization.
Integrated Water Management (IWM) is a process that helps deliver water sensitive city outcomes through collaborative and sustainable whole of water cycle planning. IWM involves a fundamental shift to a more integrated and collaborative approach to water, land use planning and urban development. IWM considers how the delivery of water, wastewater and stormwater services can contribute to water security, public and environmental health and urban amenity.
More on What We Do
We assist with flood, stormwater and waterway planning, design and management, for governments and developers.
Flood and Stormwater Forecasting, Planning, Design and Management
- For potential floods and storms, we figure out where the water will come from, where it will go, who it will impact, and how to minimise the negative impacts.
- We complete flood mapping, modelling, and measured predictions of how much water there will likely be in a waterway in various scenarios.
- Our flood modelling determines which businesses and houses will be affected in the case of excessive water, storms or flooding, which councils keep as a public record.
- We do this for entire townships, housing estates and more, determining where the water is going to go in case of heavy rainfall, storms or flooding and how to reduce the negative impact.
Waterway Planning, Design and Management
- We design, plan and manage waterways, ensuring they can withstand increased volumes of water and changes over time and plan and manage any necessary changes to ensure this.
- Where wetlands are part of a subdivision, we look at the impacts of the water bodies if they overflow and plan measures to reduce this impact.
- This involves various planning and preparation actions, from ensuring drains are in the correct places in parks and football fields to ensuring enough vegetation to ensure trees do not fall into the river during a large storm.
- For urban design, which usually involves beginning with a blank site, we complete future planning and proofing for waterways to ensure all created water bodies are planned, designed and managed correctly.
